The Motel Squad...or Does It Have A Pool?

The Motel Squad or
Does It Have A Pool?

I began planning the Great Yellowstone Expedition of 2017 back a few months before the event and I had grand illusions of taking a few of the grandkids on a trip of a lifetime. I ordered them journals, conferred with their parents on the things they'd need and arranged lodging suitable for them. Feeling like the top grandparent I was sure that they would have a trip they'd never forget and revel in the vastness of the Wyoming Wilderness I had come to know and love. All the glory and loftiness came to an end with one question from Stachia. Does it have a pool? What? Well, yes there are numerous pools in and around Yellowstone's thermal features. No, the motel?

Ouch! A pool? I was confused and a bit dazed. Why would we need a pool. I was informed that they were kids....they need a motel with a pool. Yeah but they are kids in Yellowstone....no pool required.
I was wrong.
A pool, in May, in Yellowstone could only mean one thing....indoor...$$$$. Double ouch!

I should have taken it as an omen. Had I known the lure of the motel pool, I might have known this was coming. Surely, with Moose, Bears, Bison, Elk, Wolves and geysers the pool would loose its luster and importance to The Motel Squad. Nope.

The Motel Squad.

Day one....no pool. The phrase "Are we there yet" was banned on penalty of being put out along side the road. That problem solved. Kids prepared for a long journey and electronic devices deployed and charged....check. Bathroom duties and rituals complete and the GYE of 2017 was underway. Then came the news of the Great Blizzard of the Spring of 2017 that was occurring on the chosen route of our journey. Thus, Rand McNally deployed and alternate course laid in...must go North to avoid blizzard, how ironic. Destination? Somewhere between Missouri and Wyoming. Wall South Dakota gets the nod. Tomorrow the Badlands and Grandpa shines once again.

The Motel Squad Venture Out Into the Wilds.

Day two. The Badlands...or A Kid Favorite.

Much to my surprise the Badlands were a hit. Each child actually raised their heads from their devices long enough to see that there are wonders out there beyond Cyber World. Amazed at the colors and wide open vistas, I actually saw a few sparks of loving the wild places and getting in touch with Nature. But, it was cold and short lived. The Big Horns helped get the spark back though.

On to Devil's Tower...or Another Hit for Gramps.
